Description

The term "molasses" was first mentioned in a Portuguese book written in 1582, which described the adventures of the conquest of the Indies. Molasses was used to produce fermented liqueur called rum, but also as a cheaper substitute for industrially refined sugar.

Molasses is low in saturated fats, salt and cholesterol, but is rich in: minerals: magnesium (240mg), potassium (1460mg), calcium (205mg), iron (4.7g), copper; fats: omega 6 (50mg) and vitamins: niacin (vitamin B3), B6 (34%), niacin (5%), the nutrient choline (13mg).

Molasses can be used as a sweetener, a substitute for processed crystalline sugar. Moderation is, however, the key to your health.
