Cat's claw (cat's claw or "uña de gato") is a plant widespread in Peru, known since ancient times by the first inhabitants of this area, unique in its fauna and especially its specific flora. The name comes from its bent spines, similar to cat nails, with which it attaches to other plants. It can reach a length of up to 30 m, has small and dense flowers, of an intense yellow, the parts used for medicinal purposes being the bark and roots. The cat's claw has been used by Peruvian healers since 2000 years ago for its therapeutic properties. Since 1974, it has been introduced into Western parapharmaceutical culture by the scientist Klaus Keplinger, who also undertook the first studies on this plant. In 1997, cat's claw ranked seventh in the top best-selling herbs in the United States. The best known species of this superfood are Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria guianens, the first of which is the one used to prepare supplements in the form of liquid extract, capsules, powder or tea.
