Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) , also known as ocimum sanctum, holy basil or tulasi, is an aromatic plant from the Lamiaceae family, native to tropical and subtropical Asia. In India, Tulsi is traditionally grown in a clay pot in almost any home or garden, and its health benefits are repeatedly mentioned in Ayurvedic manuscripts over 4000 years old. The name Tulsi means "incomparable" in Sanskrit and is an appellation of the goddess Lakshmi, Vishnu's consort, personification of beauty and wealth. The leaves, stem, bark and flowers of the plant can be used to support the immune system, for deep detoxification, digestion, but especially to support the central nervous system, giving a natural state of well-being. The positive effects of the plant on mood have been demonstrated by several clinical studies, two of which reported a reduction of up to 39% in stress-associated symptoms in patients with psychosomatic problems, compared to the control group. There are several types of tulsi, of which tulsi krishna, tulsi vana and tulsi rama are the best known, each with a different look, taste and smell. From the tulsi plant is used especially the leaves, prepared as teas and decoctions.
