Cordyceps is a fungus with an extremely effective therapeutic action. There is no single active principle to explain its antitumor, immunostimulatory and immunomodulatory actions. Its name in Tibetan is yartsa gunbu, which in translation means "winter-worm, summer-grass", referring to the double qualities of this fungus - the fact that in winter it lives invisibly, on the host insect, underground, feeding on the roots of some plants, so that in summer they develop a fruiting organ, which rises above the ground, like grass. Then the biological cycle resumes. It grows in isolated places in Tibet, only at high altitudes, over 3500m and only in the alpine hollows, above the limit where the forest vegetation grows. Cordyceps belongs to the class Ascomycetes, which includes about 400 species. All Cordyceps species are endoparasitic, mainly on insects and other arthropods and some are parasitic on other fungi. It is one of the rarest and most prized mushrooms, used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years.
