Description

Are you looking for the richest source of natural vitamin C? Then you found her! It is found in small, round fruits, resembling the cherries of a small bush shrub in the Amazon rainforest scientifically called Myrciaria dubia, being known to the public as Camu Camu. Although it grows in a tropical and humid climate (in the Amazon floodplains with water reaching even to the level of the crown) it resists in subtropical climates and even a few degrees above freezing. Being a shrub that has been producing fruit for several decades and world demand is growing, it has recently begun to be even cultivated, with an initiative by some governments to provide seedlings to the natives; thus, the Amazon forest is protected, offering them at the same time means of survival based on the traditional methods of cultivation and harvesting.

Camu camu is highly valued due to its edible fruits, with an extraordinarily high content of vitamin C of 1800-2700 mg per 100 g of pulp, ie ~ 2-3% of the edible part, a property that has generated demand in international product markets natural (especially in Japan). In Europe it is found rather as a nutritional supplement in the form of powder or capsules.

Although it seems that it is not in the first place in terms of vitamin C content, being awarded by Kakadu (Terminalia ferdinandiana) it does not spoil their special properties. To give you an idea, compared to oranges, camu-camu contains 30-60 times more vitamin C, 10 times more iron, 3 times more niacin (vitamin B3), 2 times more riboflavin (vitamin B2) and 50% more phosphorus. Interesting, isn't it? In addition to vitamin C, it also contains beta carotene, calcium, protein, serine, thiamine and valine, etc.

Camu Camu is thus used in 3 main directions: natural vitaminization of the body, for the prevention and treatment of flu or colds, being a successful immunostimulator and as an anti-aging factor for the skin (due to the richness of antioxidants). The Amazonian natives also use it as an aphrodisiac.

Therapeutically it is also used: for protection of the nervous system, in Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases, depression, lack of concentration, eye problems, as anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic, help prevent / treat gingivitis; protects against liver disease, increases fertility; Parkinson's, has antiseptic properties (can be applied directly to the skin if injured, to prevent infection). In Brazil it is used to protect, strengthen and manage hair. It is said that hair becomes shiny and full of life. Recently, camu camu began to be used in ranges of cosmetics (shampoos, conditioners, hair masks);

Culinary: Fruits are used as processed powder as a food supplement. Camu camu can also be used as a food ingredient, wonderfully complementing a wide range of desserts, ice creams, pies or other sweet baked goods. You can also prepare natural juices with camu camu or even light alcoholic beverages. The sour-bitter taste, typical of vitamin C, can be enhanced with honey or any other natural sweetener; or you can add ½ - 1 teaspoon in smoothies, combined with other fruits or nuts (almonds, cashews, macadamia, etc.), hemp seeds, etc.
